Laboratory of Translational Cancer Genomics

About us

Within the Chaperon action, the Laboratory of Translational Cancer Genomics has been established at the Biomedical Center and led by the ERA Chair holder, employing a newly established team of excellent researchers.

The topics of cancer research include the origins and causes of cancer, its pathophysiology, mechanisms of interaction with the hosts’ tissues, organs and immune system, metastatic activity as well as of the reaction to individual (both surgical and non-surgical) treatment procedures. In the field of cancer genomics, we need to understand the complex relationship between the genetic makeup of the tumor cells and their susceptibility/resistance to different therapeutic substances and regimens. Even though the unprecedented boom of sequencing technology has made the genetic information accessible to the researchers, it is still exceptionally difficult to read and understand because of the inherent heterogeneity of cancer cells.

Long-term aims

  • patient-oriented cancer genomics
  • genomic factors in tumorigenesis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition
  • hereditary cancer genomics and epidemiology
  • application of advanced genomics methods in clinical screening and decision-making
  • targeted treatment based on mutations in tumors following the precision medicine guidelines

Focusing on one or more of these topics, the Laboratory is guaranteed to fit in the scope of existing cancer research at the Center and to fill a crucial gap among the expertise of the existing laboratories. We closely cooperate with the Labs of Pharmacogenomics, Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration and Quantitative Histology.
